Interview: The James Clark Institute Chat About New Single "It's Only Tuesday"

2 min read

What inspired the creation of this single?

Lyrically, the ending of a long-term relationship. So, sadness mixed with a happy-go-lucky

melody and arrangement. My typical style of songwriting.

What story or message does the song convey?

I don’t like Tuesdays.

Can you tell us about the creative process?

I wrote the lyrics while on a flight home from Saskatchewan in June 2022. My now ex-partner

had just moved back there after a very long relationship together. I had driven her and her

belongings out there in a U-Haul and was on my way back to a new life that I wasn’t feeling

quite emotionally prepared for.

How does this song differ from your previous releases?

It really doesn’t differ at all. Like Ray Davies once said, “Give the people what they want.”

What challenges did you face while writing or recording?

The lyrics came very quickly. In fact, by the time the plane landed they were complete. But I

set them aside for some time not sure if I even wanted to set them to music. I think I waited

two or three years before I brought the song to the band. They were quite enthusiastic about

the song and along with producer, Moe Berg played a big part in the final arrangement of it.

Did you experiment with any new instruments, techniques, or styles?

We stuck with the classic JCI sound for this one: Electric guitars, bass, drums and keys with

plenty of sweet harmonies.

Is there a personal connection or story tied to the lyrics?

Please see my answer to your first question.

Have you performed it live yet, and what was the audience’s reaction?

To date, the band has only performed the song live once and that was quite recently. But the

reaction was very strong. We will definitely be adding it to our regular set lists.

Is this single part of a larger project, like an album or EP?

Yes. It will be included on our next full album which is looking like an early spring release.

Anything Else You'd Like Your Fans to Know.

Like all of our singles to date there is an accompanying music video for It’s Only

Tuesday. Our dear friend, Sean Ryan who has directed all of our music videos for the last 4

albums have come up with yet another brilliant concept this time.
