Interview: Sludge Mother Appear at Their Festival Debut at Furnace Fest

Who are you? And where are you from?
What's up!? We're Sludge Mother and we're from Los Angeles.
What do you enjoy about playing shows across the United States?
Cami - Well, we're about to hit our first long tour in a couple of days! We will be hitting our first U.S. tour with "Sap" and it's about seven weeks long.
We're hitting all across the U.S. And we've only done one week thus far, it was the funnest shit ever. Just getting to play with an audience and sharing our music and playing every night... we fucking love that shit!!
I believe rock and roll comes alive in a live space... So that's my favorite part, just seeing it come alive and getting to connect with people. It's just the best shit ever!
For your debut EP, “How Can Anything Bloom”, what is your favorite song off the record?
Cami - Damn... Favorite song off the record?? Well, "I Don't Want a Job" is so fun to play live. Every single time we play it live it's hype as fuck. But my personal favorite?
I love "To Live is to Die." Fuck! I said it wrong! It's "To Die is to Live". Listen... it was supposed to be called "To Live is to Die." And Metallica did it first. So we switched it. But "To Die is to Live" is my personal favorite just because of the meaning behind it.
What are y'all's favorites?
Landon - My favorite is "Bloom". That one's definitely one of my favorites off the record.
Soren - "Machine" is nasty... Definitely "Machine"
Livi - "Machine" as well
Joey - I think I'm in agreement! "Machine" is... "Machine's" my favorite
What was the Toughest?
Cami - I mean... I will say "I don't want a job" it was done completely and I was at home and I honestly, I was pissed the fuck off I was just in a really bad mood so I got into my closet and i was like I'm just gonna try recording screams for this song! It also happened with antidote I honestly was just in a really bad mood and I'd never screamed before... I never had unlocked my scream... I got in my fucking closet I opened up my DAW and i was like let me just try it and I recorded the scream that introduces "I Don't Want a Job."
It's that first opening scream and screams in "Antidote." I don't know if that was the toughest, but it did take the longest because just last minute it was totally mixed, and I was like, "I'm so sorry guys, can you just throw this in there?"
Do you have any upcoming singles, possibly anything you're working on?
Cami – We do have a lot of upcoming singles! We just recorded a full EP! We recorded in the 606 studios which was the sickest shit ever! It's the Foo Fighter's studios which we are super inspired by 90s grunge, so it was mind blowing to experience that. The first singles going to be coming out in about a month or something like that while were on tour, but we have a ton of cool shit coming and were really excited!
Are there any albums or artists that are on your radar that you would want to spotlight?
Cami - Any of the women in rock right now I think are so badass. Like "Amyl and the Sniffers" and "Showing Teeth."
Livi - I've been fucking with "Showing Teeth" so hard.
Cami - "Showing Teeth" is so sick! Any of the women that can scream and get down...
"Return to Dust" is sick and "Die Spitz," of course.
Soren - I've just discovered "Mannequin Pussy" and now that's becoming my whole identity. They're incredible, such good songwriting, such amazing chops, amazing band.
Cami – I agree with all of that! And "Faetooth!" Yeah, women in rock right now, I mean, I may be a little biased, but we're kind of crushing it!
How has your Furnace Fest been?
Cami - Bro... This is our first festival we've ever played. And the largest crowd we've ever played! This has been truly a dream come true!
We thought there was going to be a hurricane, and we flew in thinking we're going to fly straight into a hurricane. It was so stressful and scary. But the fact that we were here and got to play our first stage at The Shed, which is such a legendary stage. We just feel really honored and really stoked and just hype as fuck.
Is there anything crazy you've seen at Furnace Fest so far?
Cami - Oh my god, yes! Okay... This is the first time we've ever seen little girls crowd surfing during our set. They were probably like seven years old getting crowd surfed during our set. The whole crowd was clapping for them! It was a beautiful, beautiful experience and it was so sick! Our mosh pit was composed of seven kids. Ha ha ha! It was awesome! They were going crazy. They were mowing down grown men. It was something that you can only see here at
Furnace Fest, and we're not kidding, by the way. Literally, it was really a beautiful sight.
Tell us who you are and what is on your mind!
Landon - Um... I'm Landon. And fuck yeah!
Soren - I'm Soren, and I'm mostly focused on coming up with dope riffs. And, uh, yeah. Pwnage.
Libby - I'm Libby
Joey - And... I'm Joey and I'm just ready to get on the road! Seven weeks... It's going to be sick. I'm very excited about that.
Cami - I'm Cammie and Furnace Fest... Y'all go hard as fuck! We've been going around just being like, holy shit, the screams, the riffs, the fucking pits in this bitch. Y'all are sick as fuck. Also, Alabama, y'all's barbecue... I'm still thinking about it. Yeah, this has been a great experience, and we're just grateful to be here! Thank you for having us!!
