Interview with Zack Smith from Wavy Trees about their new single "Nothing but You".
What inspired the creation of this single?
“Nothing But You” was inspired by personal events in my life & also channeled from the dead.
What story or message does the song convey?
The story is mainly based on loving someone more than anything in the world but messing it all up because you fall in love with everyone you meet every day.
Can you tell us about the creative process?
The song started with Jason having a programmed drum and the rhythm guitar. When I heard it I instantly was in love with it and added the famous bendy guitar. The lyrics just came naturally channeled from the dead.
How does this song differ from your previous releases?
This song is a lot different from our other singles. It’s more spacey and ballady.
What challenges did you face while writing or recording?
Singing the chorus was very challenging because we are recording this whole album DIY in our living rooms, and we live in apartment buildings. So, the chorus is really loud, and I was screaming “I LOVE NOTHING BUT YOU!!!”
Did you experiment with any new instruments, techniques, or styles?
We had actually never used programmed drums before, so that was a fun journey.
Is there a personal connection or story tied to the lyrics?
Yeah, the song is extremely personal, and I actually didn’t want to release it! but then I was on a road trip with Araya and showed her the song and she said “THE WORLD NEEDS TO HEAR THIS” so we went through with the release.
Have you performed it live yet, and what was the audience’s reaction?
We performed it once at the Troubadour in Hollywood and got an awesome reaction! People vibed hard to it.
Is this single part of a larger project, like an album or EP?
This single is part of a full-length DIY album!
