Interview: Royal Commission Chat About Their Newest Single "Hard to Defend"
What inspired the creation of this single?
Small towns and toxic workplaces. I’ve lived and worked in both at one time or another.
What story or message does the song convey?
It’s about that guy who claims to know all your business but hardly ever speaks to you. They get ‘the full story’ off someone who wasn’t even there and they love to tell you all about it!
Can you tell us about the creative process?
The verse and chorus parts were taken from other songs that didn’t quite work. The bridge was in the maybe pile for a long time, then it just seemed to fit what I was doing here.
How does this song differ from your previous releases?
It’s the only one that does the quiet/loud thing which is so common in rock music, whereas I’ll usually just find the groove, lock in and not worry about the dynamics so much.
What challenges did you face while writing or recording?
Not very many, to be fair. It was pretty straightforward.
Did you experiment with any new instruments, techniques, or styles?
I managed to get the bass sound out of a regular guitar by using a pitch shifter.
Is there a personal connection or story tied to the lyrics?
I could point the finger at several people, because I’ve lived it one way or another. It’s a bit sad, because your (supposed) story is all those people have.
Have you performed it live yet, and what was the audience’s reaction?
Royal Commission is strictly a bedroom recording project at this stage (depending on how the debut album goes) but I’m sure we could get a singalong going from the chorus once it reaches that pitch.
Is this single part of a larger project, like an album or EP?
Yes! The debut album ‘Into Rock ‘n Roll’ will be available from Bandcamp and all the usual streaming services on September 24th.
