Interview: Multi Ultra Chat About Their New Single "Broken Pieces"

Interview with Derrick Wesley (singer, songwriter) and Nolan Brown (guitar, synth, songwriter).

What inspired the creation of this single?

Broken Pieces started as part of a 30-day writing exercise Derrick was embarking on. I started digging deep into past experiences and realized that without the heartbreak or failures, I wouldn't be who I am today, and I wouldn't change the way things are.

What story or message does the song convey?

The message that the song conveys is that bad experiences in the past shape us into who we are today, helping us grow and become better versions of ourselves.

Can you tell us about the creative process?

The song started with a fully drafted demo that Derrick brought to Multi Ultra, but the master version was an even more realized version of the song. Working with their producer, Tim Craven, each band member brought a degree of creative input and mastery of their instrument to the recording process. The music video was filmed in Derrick's home and was directed by the band.

How does this song differ from your previous releases?

"Broken Pieces is the most honest song I've ever written." -Derrick

What challenges did you face while writing or recording?

Every step of our process is done in house by our band and our producer. With that, time becomes scarce because if we're not writing, recording, or performing, we're directing, editing, designing, and booking.

Did you experiment with any new instruments, techniques, or styles?

We implemented several guitar tracks to create the riff in the intro of the song, whereas in the past one single guitar would've played the riff. In our ears, this technique gives the song a broken, jagged kind of feeling.

Is there a personal connection or story tied to the lyrics?

"A while back I struggled with alcohol abuse and that really put the brakes on life. But in my recovery, I started to see how much growth came from going through such a test. On the whole, the process of being an artist is lined with failure and dusting yourself on to keep forging ahead. I feel like the lyrics are a bit of a pep talk to myself about keeping on keeping on." -Derrick

Have you performed it live yet, and what was the audience’s reaction?

Yes, we've been performing the song live for a few months. On the night of its release, we played rocknite in Nashville at the Skinny Dennis and the crowd cheered after we finished. It was a landmark moment for us.

Is this single part of a larger project, like an album or EP?

Yes, we plan to release all the songs as singles and then release an album at the end of the release cycle. That's just the way that we've noticed is best to create an impact within an independently built audience.
