Interview: Get to Know Kill My Coquette

What first got you into music?

Social D, Courtney Love, Bob Dylan and Madonna. I knew I wanted to do that too but first I had to find a way to get out of the tiny town I was from.

How would you describe your music to someone who hasn’t heard it before?

Kill My Coquette is what happens when glam rock, punk, and Hollywood trashiness collide. It’s sexy, irreverent, theatrical rock with a dangerous sense of humor. Pop punk snot rock. Think Joan Jett, Brody Dalle, No Doubt, and Blondie.

Was there a defining moment when you realized music was your calling?

I was at a Social D show and as Mike Ness was singing, I looked around and saw everyone just hanging on his next words and thought “wow I wanna do that!”

Where do you find inspiration for your lyrics or melodies?

Hollywood, sex, drugs, headlines.

How do you balance personal expression and creating something your audience will love?

I think the best art comes from staying true to who you are first. I don’t try to create something I think people will like—I create something that genuinely excites me and then find the audience that connects with it. With Kill My Coquette, that means being bold, provocative, theatrical, and a little unpredictable while still giving people great songs and something they want to experience.

What has been the most rewarding moment of your career so far?

Opening for Bad Religion at The House of Blues in Vegas. I knew looking into the crowd we’d have to work hard to win them over. And we did:) Also our latest UK tour was something we’ll never forget!

Are there any specific milestones you’re working toward in your career?

We’d love to tour the US. We need a booking agent if anyone is out there!

How do you prepare for a show or tour?

I usually work out and stress pretty much all day up until the show lol.

What’s the most unusual or memorable thing that’s happened to you on stage?

In Brighton at The Pipeline my hair literally fell off into the crowd when I was head banging. Someone in the crowd threw it back and I pretended it was a live animal lol.

Can you tell us about your latest project or release?

Yes! We’re releasing our first LIVE vinyl album! We’re designing the cover art as we speak. Look for a supporting show soon in LA to celebrate its release!

What message or emotion do you hope people take away from your music?

Life’s short. Turn it up!

Who are you listening to right now?

The new Social Distortion album is great!

How do you see your music evolving in the next few years?

I think since I come from the acting world of Hollywood, I’d like to incorporate more theatrics and lights and stuff. I’d like to make elaborate costumes too but somehow never get around to it… if anyone out there wants to design my show pieces?? Get at me!

How do you handle the balance between commercial success and artistic integrity?

We just like to make music. Anything else is gravy.

What’s next for you? Any upcoming projects, tours, or surprises?

The upcoming LIVE vinyl album with local show in Los Angeles TBD. Check our website for dates - killmycoquette.com
