What inspired the creation of this single?
Musically it was inspired by 2000's metalcore and gothic music such as Evanescence, Motionless In White, Bring Me The Horizon, HIM and more!
What story or message does the song convey?
This track is about feeling the need to be perfect to fit society and others around you's standards and losing yourself completely in it. The feeling of emptiness and being dead inside while still having to portray a happy face on the outside.
Can you tell us about the creative process?
It was written by Kennedy Von Kat, Erik Jensen of Escape The Fate and 52Blu. It was produced, mixed and mastered by Erik Jensen as well. The cover art and music video was done by Jay Edonel of the band Deer Fang. The video features Kennedy's guitarist Jake Taylor and singer/bassist of Deer Fang, Lauren Leprich.
How does this song differ from your previous releases?
This song drifts more into the metalcore realm instead of the past releases being more hard rock. Which is ideally where I will be taking our career from this point forward.
What challenges did you face while writing or recording?
I found myself being very direct with the lyrics and too personal many times where I wanted it to be more broad so many people can relate but still tapping into that vulnerable side of me.
Did you experiment with any new instruments, techniques, or styles?
I have been experimenting my last couple releases including this one with fry scream and incorporating more into my songs.
Is there a personal connection or story tied to the lyrics?
Yes, as I was writing this song I was very much living it with a toxic group of people around me constantly tearing me down for everything I did. I slowly lost myself and who I was by forcing myself to be someone I am not to impress others and meet their standards.
Have you performed it live yet, and what was the audience’s reaction?
Yes, we have played it once. The diehard fans already knew all the words and were singing it out to us. Other new listeners started a mosh pit and were dancing.
