Interview with Jason Haywood.
What inspired the creation of this single?
I wrote this song about a woman who is in a relationship where she is settling for less than she deserves. She keeps glossing over the reality of the situation and telling herself that everything‘s OK.
What story or message does the song convey?
Revolving Door represents a moment of clarity in this woman’s life. At some point, she reaches a breaking point and realizes that she isn’t being appreciated or loved the way she wants to be and faces the fact that it’s time for her to move on.
Can you tell us about the creative process?
I came up with the words to the chorus while driving in my car. I began thinking about how people settle in relationships, whether the relationship is toxic or simply unfulfilling. I had the basic structure of the song very quickly, probably in 15 minutes or so, then it was down to a handful or lyrical revisions and polishing the arrangement of the song.
How does this song differ from your previous releases?
This song is more of an observation written from an outside point of view. I’m observing a situation and telling a story about someone else, whereas some of my previous singles come from a more personal place. An interesting thing about this song, and something I’ve never done in any of my lyrics, is that the verses are in third person; the narrator is observing this woman and the fact that she seems oblivious to what is going on in her relationship. Then the chorus switches to first person and you get to hear where she’s actually coming from and how she’s going to take control of her own happiness.
What challenges did you face while writing or recording?
Actually, the biggest challenge I faced with writing was trying to choose the songs that were going to be a part of the record. I’ve been going through a very fertile creative time in my life, and I had a lot of songs to choose from. This song in particular wasn’t really all that challenging to write. It was one of those songs that was written in about an hour. Sometimes when you write the chorus first, it’s easier to fill in the verses etc. around it.
Did you experiment with any new instruments, techniques, or styles?
Absolutely. For the last 10 years or so, I was coming from a more Americana-based style. I felt it was time for me to try something new and I went back to the type of music that made me fall in love with music in the first place: classic pop. This single (and also the record) is heavily influenced by my favourite bands and songwriters i.e. The Beatles, George Harrison, Tom Petty, John Lennon, Bob Dylan etc. In past bands I mostly played acoustic guitar, but on this record, I played a lot of the instruments myself including electric guitar (including a few solos), organ, and piano and I wrote all the string and horn arrangements.
Is there a personal connection or story tied to the lyrics?
The only personal connection that I could tie to this song is that I’ve seen this type of thing happen with friends, whether they’re in a relationship that isn’t ideal or maybe even toxic, and its sort of a song written for them to encourage them to get out of a situation that’s not fulfilling or rewarding.
Have you performed it live yet, and what was the audience’s reaction?
Yes, I have performed it live several times and the audience reaction has been very warm and positive.
Is this single part of a larger project, like an album or EP?
Yes, this is the fifth single off my latest album, Jason Haywood & The Goldrush.
