Interview: Jack50 Chats About Self-Titled New Album

What inspired the theme or concept behind this album?

I wanted to make a record that combines math rock, dance beats and loops. Something that is interesting to listen to that still makes you wanna dance.

Were there any particular events or emotions that shaped the songwriting?

I just turned 50. Having spent the last 30 years in different indie-rock bands, I was excited to try something new by myself for myself.

Were there any challenges you faced during the recording process?

The songs on the record flow continuously from one track to the next. Putting that together so it is cohesive and sounds good was challenging but also a lot of fun!

Which track was the most fun to create, and why?

Songs like "Clock Drip Twist" "Twist in Five for Peace" and a couple others were ones I had written a long time ago, so it was nice to hear them come to life.

Did any collaborations influence the sound or direction of this project?

My producer Keith Allen Pirtle was very helpful to the project. I couldn't have finished it without him. His advice and recording knowledge was great to have.

Did you experiment with any new techniques, instruments, or styles on this record?

The sound of this record is very electronic/dance type music. Coming from an indie-rock background, it felt natural to use my guitar, numerous effects pedals and a simple Roland 909 drum machine. Rather than trying to become a DJ or something, which I'm not. This felt more authentic.

How do you feel this album represents your evolution as a band?

This is my first solo project after being in several indie/punk/post-hc bands over the years.

What do you hope your fans take away from this album?

I hope they dance!

Have fans influenced the direction of your music or this album in any way?

No but I myself am a huge fan of bands like Battles and Tame Impala. And I tried to mix up those sounds a bit to create my own thing.

What can fans expect from your upcoming tour or album release events?

Look for some cool looping videos on my Instagram.

Do you have any music videos planned for the album? What can you share about them?

Not at this time. But I'm always posting videos of myself making loops with my guitar and pedals on Instagram.

If you could describe this album in three words, what would they be?

Instrumental, Danceable, Math-Rock.

Is there a specific moment during the album’s creation that you’ll always remember?

Getting the drums right. I always intended for the drums to be programmed. However, I originally wanted a more "realistic" drum sound. But once my producer and I tried out the classic Roland 909, we knew this was direction we wanted to take with the drum sound.

Do you have a tour booked or is one being booked to promote the album?

Jack50 is a solo recording project only.

Anything Else That You'd Like the Fans to Know.

For fans of: Battles, LCD Sound System, Tame Impala, King Gizzard
