Interview: Get to Know Yo Boi
What first got you into music?
Music has been a part of my life since I was a teenager. Honestly the first thing that intrigued me about being an artist was hearing Nas Illmatic. I knew then this is something I give my life to pursue.
How would you describe your music to someone who hasn’t heard it before?
It's real, raw, authentic and full of emotions.
Was there a defining moment when you realized music was your calling?
Yes, the tragic death of my little brother Jerrell Sanford in 2021. It pushed me into music full-time. This showed me I need to take my dream and make it a reality before it's too late.
Where do you find inspiration for your lyrics or melodies?
The inspiration comes from things I have seen or been through in my personal life. I speak my truth and pour out my heart on every track.
How do you balance personal expression and creating something your audience will love?
By being real, raw and authentic. I give them all of my past, present and future when I create my music.
What has been the most rewarding moment of your career so far?
Getting a chance to connect with DJ Lord Sear before his death. He was the first person to give my music its first major platform through his show The Lord Sear Special on SiriusXM’s Shade 45 channel (created by Eminem). I never really got the chance to thank him like I wanted to. I will always be forever grateful to him for that opportunity.
Are there any specific milestones you’re working toward in your career?
Yes, a major distribution and publishing deal for my independent record label Beats By Yo Boi Inc and production company Flytech Productions.
How do you prepare for a show or tour?
Prayer and practice puts me in the right mindset to get the job done on stage.
What’s the most unusual or memorable thing that’s happened to you on stage?
The most memorable thing is the reaction I get from the fans. It gives me inspiration to continue on my journey in music.
Can you tell us about your latest project or release?
Yes, it's a full-scale R&B album entitled Echoes of the Past. I'm getting ready to release the first official single (Times Two) ײ through Rocnation Distribution
Are there any collaborations in the works you’re excited about?
Yes, my double disc LP Cracked Mirrors/Master Class and my first official studio album Lost Angel's and Empty Bottles both produced by Anno Domini Beats.
What message or emotion do you hope people take away from your music?
Through pain comes purpose no matter what you go through in life. There is nothing you can't overcome with dedication and walking in faith.

How do you see your music evolving in the next few years?
I see it evolving into a road map that other artist can model their careers after.
How do you handle the balance between commercial success and artistic integrity?
By staying committed, humble, dedicated, self-motivated and walking in faith.
What’s next for you? Any upcoming projects, tours, or surprises?
