Interview: Get to Know winry
What first got you into music?
I think what first got me into music was my mom playing neil young and rod stewart and the Beatles, and my dad playing whatever he played.
How would you describe your music to someone who hasn’t heard it before?
I'd say my music is alternative/punk/noise. It kinds varies a lot. I'd say for soundalikes, Elliott Smith, Built to Spill, and maybe Nirvana? sure, I'll go with that.
Was there a defining moment when you realized music was your calling?
I remember when I was about five or something, my dad said "you'll really like this" and showed me the music video for Come Together, and that was when I had my "oh my god, this is what I want to do for a living" moment.
Where do you find inspiration for your lyrics or melodies?
My lyrics tend to either come from pain or nowhere. Either something really horrible happened and it comes out in writing, or I just get this story in my head. My melodies come from out of the blue - I usually just randomly get a melody in my head, but sometimes i have to actually sit down and come up with one.
How do you balance personal expression and creating something your audience will love?
I think that if people like my music, they'll like anything i express, whether punk, noise, grunge, spoken word poetry, whatever form it takes.
What has been the most rewarding moment of your career so far?
Getting my first 10 bucks on Bandcamp was an absolutely amazing feeling. I was gonna say when i got my stuff on streaming, but i honestly hate that whole world, so I'm probably gonna take it off everything besides youtube or something.
Are there any specific milestones you’re working toward in your career?
I'm working towards playing shows and living off of music. Sadly where I currently live has no places for shows for people my age.
How do you prepare for a show or tour?
I can't, haha. but, I imagine I'd practice a setlist and make sure I have my guitar and my soundhole pickup, and that my voice doesn't sound like shit.
What’s the most unusual or memorable thing that’s happened to you on stage?
Well, one time, I performed an Elliott Smith song in front of my dad, and he got pissed cuz I was so much better at guitar than him (he does this a lot, he's a piece of work).
Can you tell us about your latest project or release?
"ego death" is me finally finding my footing in recording and writing, and pouring my heart out about my personal issues, while also telling a story (what that story is, I'll leave up for you to decide).
Are there any collaborations in the works you’re excited about?
Yeah! I've been trying to write songs with my friends. Hoping they'll come out lol.
What message or emotion do you hope people take away from your music?
I want people to take away that no matter how deep in the shit you are, it'll all be okay eventually.
Who are you listening to right now?
A lot of the Beatles, Elliott Smith, Glen Campbell, Neil Young, Rod Stewart, Nirvana, Bill Withers, the list goes on and on, really.
How do you see your music evolving in the next few years?
I'm not fully sure! I think i see it going in either a really heavy and noisy direction, or a trashier, more pop direction. i'm not sure which'll come first.
How do you handle the balance between commercial success and artistic integrity?
Commercial success is secondary.
What’s next for you? Any upcoming projects, tours, or surprises?
I'm working on demos for an album :)
