Interview: Get to Know Alder Creek
Interview with Josh Palmer (Guitar/Bass/Vocals/Writer) of Alder Creek.
What first got you into music?
Guitar Hero and Avenged Sevenfold. Guitar Hero made me want to learn to play a real guitar and listening to Avenged made me want to learn the guitar parts for their songs.
How would you describe your music to someone who hasn’t heard it before?
We’re on the lighter side of death-core. Essentially death-core with metal -core influences.
Was there a defining moment when you realized music was your calling?
Probably the first time I played a song all the way through, correctly. I loved the feeling of that and knew I needed to keep going.
Where do you find inspiration for your lyrics or melodies?
Mostly horror movies and real life paranormal/scary experiences from my childhood.
How do you balance personal expression and creating something your audience will love?
It may sound selfish but I write music that I want to listen to. So I don’t really consider others when I’m writing.
What has been the most rewarding moment of your career so far?
My band recently played their first real venue show and the crowd chanted our name and shouted for an encore. That was pretty sick.
Are there any specific milestones you’re working toward in your career?
We are working towards at least one show a month. That would be really cool if we were able to reach that goal this year because we are not a touring band yet. We’re still very small.
How do you prepare for a show or tour?
Panic practice and pre show meal and a shot with the band.
What’s the most unusual or memorable thing that’s happened to you on stage?
A drunk guy fell over our monitor at a bar show.
Can you tell us about your latest project or release?
We just released 2 songs- an instrumental single (Interlude) and an old song that was just instrumental but now includes vocals (The Devastation). We will be working on and hopefully finishing an EP by the end of 2026.
Are there any collaborations in the works you’re excited about?
None currently, but definitely open to collaborations.
What message or emotion do you hope people take away from your music?
I really just want people to have a good time, especially in the pit, at our shows. Our music is dark and scary but we have a lot of fun writing and performing it so I hope that shows when we’re on stage.
Who are you listening to right now?
Alpha Wolf, Thrown, Varials, Like Moths To Flames. Mostly metal-core bands.
How do you see your music evolving in the next few years?
More aggressive breakdowns, heavier, gnarlier vocals
How do you handle the balance between commercial success and artistic integrity?
I don’t really need to balance it at the moment because we’re not really all that successful. So really the music that you hear is the music that I want to be writing and playing.
What’s next for you? Any upcoming projects, tours, or surprises?
We’ll be working towards our EP, hopefully finishing that up and releasing it at the end of the year. And other than that just a few fall shows lined up right now, hopefully more to announce soon!
