Artist Interview with Denise Marsa

ree

What first got you into music?

My soul connected with music from a very young age. I sang, danced, and played; it was in my blood (maybe “bones” instead?) from day 1. Okay, maybe day 2.

How would you describe your music to someone who hasn’t heard it before?

Unique, well put together, genre-crossing, relevant, timeless, with noteworthy lyrics and a voice to match the words.

Was there a defining moment when you realized music was your calling?

There’s never been a time in my life when music didn’t call to me. I came out of my mom’s belly singing…

Where do you find inspiration for your lyrics or melodies?

In life, in visuals, in my imagination, in my surroundings, in art, in the piano.

How do you balance personal expression and creating something your audience will love?

I don’t know that I do. I’ve been fortunate in finding an audience who appreciates what I create.

What has been the most rewarding moment of your career so far?

This interview. Releasing PIVOTAL has been amazingly rewarding. Also premiering my concert/show THE PASS in London in 2018. I started from the beginning of my career with short stories and songs and it gave me a definitive look at who I am as an artist through the years. I understood myself better and the choices I made, having done it.

What’s the most unusual or memorable thing that’s happened to you on stage?

Almost forgot the words to a song in front of 3000 people in London at the start of a tour I was a big part of. A song that was well known, a big hit at the time - and it was my first time singing it live. It was rough, with a last-moment-brain-working, lyric came-out.

Can you tell us about your latest project or release?

PIVOTAL is a defining experience for me. I titled it without knowing I was going to be pivoting. It has produced hits in the UK on the dance charts and it is helping to find me more fans. It is my biggest effort to date in promoting my work.

Are there any collaborations in the works you’re excited about?

I am working on vocal recordings for my new album RISK + HEAL with musician, engineer, and producer Richie Wicander who was recently on tour with @framinghanley. He also manages the BMG studio in NYC. My song catalog is currently administered by BMG USA. He’s very talented and it’s been lots of fun so far. We are also very much in sync, most of the time.

What message or emotion do you hope people take away from your music?

Whatever they wish to. I create it, release it, and then it is in their hands. It then belongs to them.

How do you see your music evolving in the next few years?

I am looking at today and tomorrow. Working on my next album RISK + HEAL – I am not looking years ahead…moments ahead work best for me.

How do you handle the balance between commercial success and artistic integrity?

I do what feels right to me artistically and welcome the success that may come.

What’s next for you? Any upcoming projects, tours, or surprises?

"Company of Women" is my sole focus right now with a few final songs being promoted from PIVOTAL.
