Spin Doctors Record Release ‘Face Full of Cake’ at Brooklyn Bowl in New York City

Every time I’m covering a concert for a media outlet, I take time to listen during the day, even when I’m having my meals or at the gym, running or walking outdoors, or wherever I may go. It was Saturday, April 12, 2025; I woke up around noon and had coffee. Instead of using my headset, I decided to take out my boombox on the balcony and had brunch while listening to Spin Doctors on Spotify.

Do you remember the man with the beard, long hair, and woolen cap? That infectious song that was a staple on radio stations throughout the 1990s. Yes, it's "Two Princes"—and the band behind it is still active. Yeah, Spin Doctors. It may not be easy for me to admit, but when I learned that I had the chance to see Spin Doctors perform live and photograph their performance just a little while ago, I was incredibly excited. This was my opportunity to finally check off the experience of hearing the iconic '90s anthem "Two Princes," performed by one of the rock legends who brought it to life. "Two Princes!" That was their defining hit—an unforgettable song that resonated with everyone, regardless of their musical preferences. I had always harbored a desire to witness the once-popular 1990s band Spin Doctors deliver this classic in a live setting, and now that moment was within reach.

The Spin Doctors have successfully maintained their original lineup of three members: Chris Barron, Aaron Comess, and Eric Schenkman. Jack Daley joined in 2021, while continuing to create new music, refreshing their sound while remaining true to their roots. To celebrate the release of their latest album, Face Full of Cake, they held an event at one of Brooklyn's iconic live music venues, Brooklyn Bowl. As the band commemorates more than three decades of collaboration, they continue to demonstrate remarkable vitality. Their performance at Brooklyn Bowl served as a powerful reminder of their enduring legacy as one of the most iconic acts from the '90s, delivering a live show that is as dynamic and engaging as it has always been.

So let me tell you about that night and what ignited me and the crowd. Chris Barron's circle kicks around the mic were the highlight, lol. I stood there in front of him after witnessing the many kicks he does, and I got incredibly lucky to have captured that moment and freeze it in time. Every time he did that; fans were laughing and equally amazed by his moves. And he can dance! I was very fortunate to have captured their entire set, but there was no photo pit, of course, and I encountered some old and grumpy fans, which I expected. Chris’ voice was still the same, and he is 58 years old now. From what I heard during the day playing on Spotify, nothing has changed. WOW. His energy was very infectious; even while I was photographing, I could feel my body wanting to dance. Eric Schenkman’s guitar skills were top-notch, and the blues rhythms and lead sections of each song were excellent. Aaron Comess’ drum track was groovy and yet simple, and with Jack Daley's bassline, they’re back.

The Spin Doctors' dedication to their artistry and their audience guarantees that they will keep captivating fans for many years to come, seamlessly blending beloved classics with fresh compositions. I must say, despite not being familiar with all the new songs, I had a wonderful evening. It was an entertaining and enjoyable night! The atmosphere was quite packed with a bunch of fathers, mothers, and maybe even grandparents, and it seemed like the band was having a great time as well. Indeed, the Spin Doctors have made their return!
