One of the most fun parts of a film is the music. There’s something about it that can bring a whole movie together. Whether it’s a full orchestral score a la John Williams, or a collection of carefully crafted contemporary songs hand-picked one by one, it is crucial to tie up all the loose ends. Nothing in Hollywood would truly hit home if there weren’t the glue of music to hold it all together.
From the World of John Wick: Ballerina will not only be featuring compositions from the likes of Tyler Bates and Joel J. Richard, but the film has already shown us the promise of an epic soundtrack.
As if the rendition of Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer” we were treated to in the trailer wasn’t enough, fans have been completely spoiled with a new single from two absolute powerhouse vocalists.
“Hand That Feeds” is that single.
Neither Halsey nor Amy Lee of Evanescence are strangers to having tracks involved with films, but the converging of the two wasn’t something that most people would have thought of. Amy Lee’s haunting vocals feel like they lend themselves to something darker, and more ethereal, while Halsey has never failed to bring us a healthy serving of emotionally charged pop. Pairing the two of them is something that almost feels like it shouldn’t work, but it most certainly does.
The song starts us off with a haunting melody, and Halsey’s familiar timbre, which is somewhat of a surprise given the music beneath it. The instrumentation certainly registers more as something you would hear off of an album circa 2003, but the second that first verse gives way to the chorus, it is game on.
Who doesn't love a good 80’s dance beat? It’s this driving tempo, a mix of drums and synth that pushes the song forward with a new energy and brings us to the very doorsteps of Amy Lee’s verse.
It is so wildly fun to hear the way this song was composed. Halsey’s earnest voice overtop music that feels so reminiscent of Evanescence’s iconic sound then coupled with Lee’s rich tone paired with that electronic vibe we’re more used to seeing with Halsey’s discography. It is a perfect blend altogether; the same way the vocalists intertwine their harmonies like they were meant to be together.
You say I mean the world to you to keep me on my kneesT hen dig the knife in deeper just to watch how much I bleed I’m stripped to the bone, I don’t wanna be alone No matter how I ou do it ‘cause you know you can Turn around and bite the hand that feeds
“Hand That Feeds” is a rich purple decorated in flares and bursts of dazzling gold, and it holds a powerful message of wielding your strength against those who threaten to oppress you.
Every single thing about this song is a match made in heaven for this film. The story is about a young woman, Eve Maccar (Ana de Armas) hell-bent and on a mission; prepared to do anything and everything within her power to avenge her father’s death.
“From the World of John Wick: Ballerina” is set to hit theatres across on June 6th, 2025, and it promises to be just as heavily charged and action-packed as all of its predecessors- but this time, we’re being gifted with an incredible leading lady equipped with a flamethrower.
