Music Review: The Warning Release Everything's Falling

When the Villareal sisters hit the music scene in 2017, no one could have guessed just how quickly their career would take off. Four studio albums, 2 EPs, and a live album later, the trio from Monterrey, Mexico, also known as The Warning, are back and even more hard hitting in their songwriting with their August 28th release, Everything’s Falling. 

The fifth studio release touches on themes of facing down, fighting, and eventually overcoming failure. In other words, Daniela (vocalist, guitarist), Paulina (drummer/backing vocals) and Alejandra (bassist/backing vocals) are persistent without exception. 

The lead track, “Ritual”, is explosive with heavy riffs and punchy vocals is a soaring track that is just one of several worthy of a fist pumping arena crowd. 

It’s followed by the emotionally charged “Perfect Daughter” with Daniela calling out an abusive relationship and the resilience tinged with anger for not being able to move through it.

One of the bigger themes in recent hard rock and metal has been mental health and the pain of pretending to be okay. The title track brings this into sharp focus with Daniela singing, “When somebody smiles it doesn’t mean they always mean it/they just try to hide behind the rot/What do I do when everything begins to lose its feeling/Comfortably numb and I’m the cause.”

The sisters take aim at misogyny within the music industry that believes women don’t deserve a seat at the table with that frustration bleeding into the lyrics, “They tell me ‘Baby go sing your little songs’/those eyes start creeping up and down my body/Looking for the cracks to sink their teeth into my porcelain.”  On the flipside is the Spanish language track “Ego” that talks about doing what you want to regardless of what others think.

What’s most impressive about the album is the musicianship and how it all comes together to bring focus to a central idea of resilience. Daniela’s vocals carry weight in every track while Alejandra’s bass tone and Paulina’s drums and the knockout punch.
