Interview with Andrew Colborne of Born Riot about their upcoming single "Home"!
Name of the Single and the Release Date?
"Home" - Friday June 13
What inspired the creation of this single?
Well, this song has been kicking around since the start of the band, it was one of the original early songs in our original line up. I really liked the lyrics, and they showed up really easily. I had the harmonies, and the structure pretty much dialed immediately. If memory serves, this song showed up with the riff and the title for some reason, so I wrote it based on the title.
What story or message does the song convey?
It’s a wandering song; it’s about not going home. It’s pretty dark but non-specific to any one thing. It has a feeling of being unsettled at the core but content to roam.
Can you tell us about the creative process?
In this current lineup of the band, we are really lucky to have a really wide musical base to draw from covering a lot of genres and styles within us four. We liked the song, but it never felt solid, a little too bouncy in its original form, it didn’t really match the lyrics. Griff and I started playing around with the intro and outro and made a nice chill back and forth jam while Ryan and Tyler held down the heavy to start it off. The new vibe blended well, and the song seemed to get better from there. Griff also tweaked the chord progression slightly to take some of the bounce out and Tyler, who is usually really pretty busy on the kit, pulled it way back to let the song breathe. The end result came as a bit of a surprise to us all when we finally got into the studio to track it. It, got really, really heavy.
And the really nice contrast about having some time in the studio, we really got to flush out some really cool harmonies and extra bits we just can’t swing live but makes the song really interesting to listen to as a stand-alone song.
Live is different, but the song still really works and it’s one of our favs to open the show with.
How does this song differ from your previous releases?
It’s a bit of a departure but it’s still Born Riot. We went extra on extra parts, and harmonies because that’s what the song needed. Griff and I really went to town on the fun little bits.
We also took our time with this one. The last EP we smashed it out pretty quick and dirty. I wasn’t super stoked on my vocals and was happy to take my time with "Home".
What challenges did you face while writing or recording?
The biggest challenge was finding the time to finish it all up. Ha, ha,
Our family and work lives ramped up significantly and our spare time, which was usually band time, was taken up with family and work commitments. Nothing wrong with that, but it made it tricky to keep the momentum from the studio to finish it up.
And we’re old men now, haha, I can’t speak for the other dudes, but I’m f*cking tired! The last five years have been intense on all fronts, and I am finally feeling like myself again. So, a bit of a slow period in the band doesn’t make me sad…other than I miss the other dudes in the group. They are my pals, and we have a lot of fun together. So, while down time is good, it comes with missing other stuff...same song, same verse…
Did you experiment with any new instruments, techniques, or styles?
Yes, we added instruments that wouldn’t normally accompany us on stage, like mandolins and acoustic guitars. Also, so many harmonies. We would need to add a few more members to the band to pull this song off live like it is on the recording.
But I like that it is its own animal live vs the recording. Same song, same vibe, different iteration. I dig it.
Is there a personal connection or story tied to the lyrics?
Probably. But I should likely go to therapy before I read too much into it.
Honestly though, growing up, I never really felt at home in my own home, and this definitely speaks to that feeling.
Have you performed it live yet, and what was the audience’s reaction?
Yeah, we’ve done this song a bunch over the last few years. This version definitely hits the audience differently. Maybe it’s Griff with his double neck Gibson that just commands attention, but the song hits and people love it.
Is this single part of a larger project, like an album or EP?
We are always working on stuff, we recorded half of another tune when we did this one and we’ll release that one at some point, but this is gonna be a single with a music video that we’re working on the story board for currently. Hopefully we’ll get it shot this summer…
Anything Else You'd Like Your Fans to Know.
This tune is a big, loud, old amp and big drums rock and roll song. Turn it up, roll your car windows down and let 'er rip.
