Interview with Zack Smith, Lead Singer of Wavy Trees about their new video for “Growing Up”.
What inspired the concept for the music video?
We had a different concept where I would get eaten by a shark but then Sean Barrett (the director of the music video) had the better idea and we just ran with it!
How does the video reflect the themes or story of the song?
To me it feels like the burning of your youth and kind of coping with it being gone.
Are there any hidden meanings or Easter eggs in the video?
That’s a question for Sean but I’m sure there is haha he’s the man!
What was the most exciting part of filming the video?
Probably slamming claws and playing with Sean’s cat in his studio.
What was the process of working with the director and production team like?
Sean Barrett is one of our favorite artists/directors so it’s always an amazing experience collaborating with him! He understands us and that’s the most important part of it!!
How did you choose the locations for the video?
Just stood in front of a green screen and said yes, this is it, hahah!
Were there any scenes or visuals that pushed you creatively or emotionally?
Probably the scene where I’m in the room with the blink poster, that was literally like my childhood room. That made me emotional haha.
What do you think the music video adds to the song that the audio alone cannot?
Visuals always make you feel more! So, it adds more feel!
Are there any behind-the-scenes moments you’d like to share with fans?
Sean’s cat zombie is the coolest cat in the world, also Brian had to wear a jacket the entire video, and it was like 100 degrees in the studio haha !
What’s next for you creatively after this video release?
Write more music and try to get past all these gate keepers in the music business! To all you music business dudes out there, get on the ride before it’s too late. And if you're reading this and wavy already exploded, you missed ur shot 🤙🏻

Zack (lead singer of Wavy Trees) further mentions: "Growing Up" is a song about the inevitable truth that finds us all. Having to ditch hanging out with your friends every day and partying for the work life. In the process of growing up you fail miserably many times! Whether it’s school, work, or your relationship, we all crash and burn many times before reaching adulthood. Also, if you listen closely to the beginning of the song, we have a sample recording we took with an iPhone at the Sublime concert in Long Beach, California of people just talking and getting pumped up for the show with us."
