Interview: Wave Break Release's New Track, Spinning Out!

ree

Interview with Wave Break's vocalist Kelly Barber.

What inspired the creation of this single?

Our bassist Tom had initially demo'ed out a riff and then Will took it and expanded on it, changed it up and demo'ed it into a full song. Then we wrote the other instruments and lyrics!

What story or message does the song convey?

I decided to write the lyrics with the concept of "Spinning Out" because of the overall feel of the song - it kind of feels like you're spinning out. And I wrote it about spiraling because of anxiety, feeling like you're losing control of your life because of it and then engaging in self-destructive behaviors. The song and the imagery around the song are all centered around the feeling of "spinning out" and how it feels to spiral from anxiety.

Can you tell us about the creative process?

Our guitarist Will had demo'ed this one out himself and then we wrote the other parts to it and the lyrics. Then we added in another double chorus and I took the demo and wrote the lyrics. After that we went into the studio to record it!

How does this song differ from your previous releases?

It differs quite a bit because this is our first release with screams on it, courtesy of our guitarist Josh! It also has a bit more of a post-hardcore flair overall and is one of our riffier songs because of Will's influence on the instrumental.

What challenges did you face while writing or recording?

Without getting too into it, the creation of this song was delayed some by some internal struggles that we had around New Year's. We had initially started working on it last fall and then didn't actually record the instruments until January. Then we finished the vocals up over the summer after Josh joined the band and after promo for our single Easier Said calmed down. So it's been in the works for a bit.

Did you experiment with any new instruments, techniques, or styles?

Mostly just adding in Josh's harsh vocals and screams!

Is there a personal connection or story tied to the lyrics?

I wrote the lyrics about my own experiences with feeling like I can't ever stay on top of things and feeling like I'm drowning and my life is falling apart because of how anxiety sets me back. The song also touches on self-destructive behaviors like self-isolation and ruining all of your personal relationships because of it, which I've definitely engaged in. I tend to ignore messages and emails sometimes when I get overwhelmed and I'm not proud of it, because it just builds and builds and creates more anxiety. It's something I'm trying to get better at managing.

Have you performed it live yet, and what was the audience’s reaction?

We've performed it a few times now, at Summer Scream Fest in Brooklyn, in Upstate New York and also in Scranton PA! So far the consensus is that people love it, so we're excited to keep playing it.

Is this single part of a larger project, like an album or EP?

This is going to be a standalone single - there are no plans to wrap this one or Easier Said into an EP later on. We plan to keep doing singles for a while to try and get our names out there more before we do another project like an EP or album.
