What first got you into music?
It was going to local punk and house shows and seeing that anyone can get on stage and play!
How would you describe your music to someone who hasn’t heard it before?
Oooh, that is a great question! I would say freeform jazz because there is no one genre I play in. SPF Presents... is about the freedom of letting the music leading me to wherever it takes me. Sometimes it is bright or poppy, sometimes noisy, sometimes dark.
Was there a defining moment when you realized music was your calling?
It was the first time I couldn't help but feel an overwhelming need to move with the beat of the music. My brain wasn't thinking about the music but my body was moving. I could Feel it!
Where do you find inspiration for your lyrics or melodies?
There are no lyrics. It is all about the music and how you connect with it!
How do you balance personal expression and creating something your audience will love?
I don’t think about it really. It might be cliché, but I think that if you put your audience first then you are putting yourself last.
What has been the most rewarding moment of your career so far?
Watching people dance and enjoy my music who were unsure of what I was going to play.
Are there any specific milestones you’re working toward in your career?
Nope! Looking to play more shows, meet new people, create new music and just experience life.
How do you prepare for a show or tour?
For shows, I think about how I want the performance to flow. It can't be all gas so I try to create cues for myself to add in nuances and maybe slow the pace, add air or brightness. For touring, it is all about making sure you have all your ducks in a row. The last thing you want to do is have a cord or a battery die mid performance.
What’s the most unusual or memorable thing that’s happened to you on stage?
The most unusual thing would definitely be watching a group of big battle vested punks stare me down with their arms crossed from off stage and then come up to me and tell me how much they loved it my set.
Can you tell us about your latest project or release?
The latest release is "The Sound of a Mtn". This is a darker and more open soundscape. I let the music guide me to a place and then let the rest happen.
Are there any collaborations in the works you’re excited about?
Not yet but I am always looking to meet and work with new people on all things creative!
What message or emotion do you hope people take away from your music?
Joy and that feeling after a good cry and you feel lighter than before.
Who are you listening to right now?
Miles Davis Septet live in 71 (great video on YouTube of the full performance), Dillinger Escape Plan, Mars Volta, and The Blood Brothers, MACROSS 82-99
How do you see your music evolving in the next few years?
Mysteriously.
How do you handle the balance between commercial success and artistic integrity?
If you chase after commercial success, you're going to lose all sense of who you are as an artist. There is a difference between evolving as an artist and chasing trends and it will destroy you in the end if you are always chasing after it.
What’s next for you? Any upcoming projects, tours, or surprises?
It’s all in the pipeline! There are tons of surprises, so keep your peepers peeled!
