Interview with Mathew Holtby about his upcoming single "This is Bliss".
What inspired the creation of this single?
My beautiful wife and the life we’ve made together. We’ve been together 22 years and have two wonderful kids. The story is plain and simple.
What story or message does the song convey?
See above. ;)
Can you tell us about the creative process?
I quite literally ran to the upstairs bathroom with my guitar once the melody came to me. I wrote the song in minutes.
How does this song differ from your previous releases?
I self-produced and mixed this one by myself. It’s the first time I’ve handled everything other than the drum mix, and an outside mastering job from Gavin of The Wooden Sky. Colin Kennedy of Doses mixed the drums and helped me track vocals at his studio. Other than that, it was a solo mission.
What challenges did you face while writing or recording?
Just being over meticulous about everything. I must have listened to this song 1200 times before signing off on it. It was a labour of love without question.
Did you experiment with any new instruments, techniques, or styles?
Just mic placements and a new little synth I borrowed from my friend’s son. I also bought a used freezer to use for an isolation cabinet to track electric guitars, and it worked pretty cool!
Is there a personal connection or story tied to the lyrics?
100%. It’s all in there, including the first meeting of my wife’s father.
Have you performed it live yet, and what was the audience’s reaction?
Yes, I've just started performing it live. Some people have giggled, and my best friend was brought to tears. It’s certainly one I love to play and talk about.
Is this single part of a larger project, like an album or EP?
It’s my second single of 2025 so far. More to come!
