Interview with Flash Bangs, George Westerholm, about their upcoming single "Hide Away", out Friday June 6, 2025.
What inspired the creation of this single?
"Hide Away" for some reason has a power to orient us as a band. We usually start our rehearsals with it. It’s a rock for us.
What story or message does the song convey?
Too often the art of living is traded away for a smaller personal narrative of sadness and disappointments. It sounds dreary when you say it like that. But that’s the idea behind it. It’s probably better if you just listen to the song.
Can you tell us about the creative process?
I remember a nurse telling me once that often nurses working in the birthing ward of a hospital get addicted to it because the atmosphere there is so magical. It’s new life coming into the world and it’s intoxicating. That’s the creative process as well. When a song starts to happen it’s really something special. And like a new born it takes time for it to become who it really is but the essence was there right at the beginning.
How does this song differ from your previous releases?
This EP is the first Flash Bangs release but the song differs from the others on the record in that it is the only straight ahead rocker. "Hide Away" is a song that caught the band in a more serious mood. But it isn’t somber. It’s getting down to business really.
What challenges did you face while writing or recording?
"Hide Away" is one of the first tunes we started playing together. Listening to it now, it represents a time when we were still finding out who we were as a band. So it kind of has a special place in our hearts because of that. It’s nice because "Hide Away" is when all the pieces fell into place in a way that made us all say ‘Yes’.
Did you experiment with any new instruments, techniques, or styles?
We did on the EP for sure. Working with Tim Foy as our producer we had the fortune to get creative with ridiculous pedals and percussion and sounds that we had not considered when we wrote and rehearsed the tunes. Now it’s hard to believe the songs could have ever been without those sounds.
Is there a personal connection or story tied to the lyrics?
There’s always a personal connection. If there wasn’t the music would be too clinical. The songs all have to mean something and they do. "Hide Away" is one of the more literal in terms of lyrics, but even one a little more ridiculous like "Here We Go Again" has a root somewhere in you. Like a lot of lyrics it starts out being about a specific person and moment but ends up being a composite of your life in total.
Have you performed it live yet, and what was the audience’s reaction?
"Hide Away" is often a song we open our shows with and for us it’s a kind of a statement to ourselves and the audience that this is who we are. Maybe because it was from that time at the beginning when we first became Flash Bangs. The song introduced us to ourselves and now we use it to introduce ourselves to the audience.
Is this single part of a larger project, like an album or EP?
Yes a four track EP that has a foot in few different worlds but ends up being 100% Flash Bangs.
