Concert Review: STS9 at Big Night Live in Boston, MA

I was invited, to STS9’s concert in Boston, take a few photos and write a review. The show was at Big Night Live, a luxury, multi-level music hall. I have photographed a lot of Jam bands, but I have never seen STS9, and I was not sure what to expect.

STS9, an acronym for Sound Tribe Sector 9, is an American instrumental band renowned for their distinctive “livetronica” sound. Formed in 1996, the quintet masterfully blends elements of electronic music, jazz, funk, rock, and ambient soundscapes with live improvisation, creating a unique and ever-evolving sonic experience.

STS9 has performed countless shows nationwide and consistently sells out venues like the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheater, where they have played over 30 times. The group has also been honored with induction into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame.

STS9 continues to find ways to build community, consistently spearheading charitable efforts with their own Just Thanks Foundation and founding its own independent record label, 1320 Records.

Using electronic and acoustic means, the instrumental five-piece—comprised of Hunter Brown (guitar/programming), Jeffree Lerner (percussion), David Phipps (keyboards), Zach Velmer (drums), and Alana Rocklin (bass) —channels the primordial and celestial, producing a cutting-edge sound that has forged a path for multiple generations of electronic dance music.

STS9’s performance was fantastic. The large crowd was electric, bouncing and swaying. I loved every minute of the show!  Their music permeates your soul and takes you on a ride through the cosmic universe. The performance combined with their integrated and extraordinary light show made the experience something to remember.  STS9 had just released their newest album late last year and is touring in support of the 19-track album, Human Dream. With an ethos rooted in exploration STS9 has been a sonic pioneer for two decades.

The audience in Boston was in love with the band. While STS9’ live sets are known for their fluidity, fans at the venue danced all night under the influence of some popular songs composed by the group such as “Scheme”, “When the Dust Settles”, “Pony”, and “Instantly”.

STS9's show at Big Night Live was not just a concert, but an exceptional live music experience.  From the beginning to the end, the performance was exceptional.
