Concert Review: Mariah The Scientist at All Points East

Mariah the Scientist arrived at All Points East to find an audience that did not need winning over. From the opening moments, Victoria Park was singing with her. Mariah was part of the hand-picked line-up of Tyler the Creator’s All Points East Takeover.
The Atlanta-born singer has built her following through deeply personal R&B, writing openly about love, heartbreak and the complications between the two. That audience has grown rapidly around her latest album, Hearts Sold Separately, which topped Billboard’s R&B Albums chart, while Burning Blue became her first US Top 40 hit.
Her performance remained remarkably intimate despite the size of the crowd. All for Me and 2 You left space for thousands of voices to fill, while three songs in, Mariah threw her hat into the audience — a small moment that brought her even closer to a crowd already hanging on every word.
Eternal Flame was delivered with restraint, but the biggest responses came with Is It a Crime and the beautiful Burning Blue. The latter felt enormous, its deeply personal writing being sung back from across the field. Those voices were for Mariah, her fanbase deeply devoted to her art.
Mariah writes like she is speaking to one person. At All Points East, thousands answered. This was not a crowd discovering Mariah the Scientist, they had already found her and were there in huge numbers.
