Boy George and the Culture Club brought the 1980s, nightclub party to the Wind Creek Event Center in Bethlehem, PA. I couldn't of been happier to cover this concert. I grew up in the 1980's my core memories start just as MTV hit the airwaves. I have fond memories of seeing the Culture Club's video's and watching Boy George strut his authentic self. The videos were always filled with so much color and dancing, they had a feeling of freedom that I recognized even as a youngster.
Fast forward to 2024 I got the opportunity to see Boy George in Moulin Rougue, he was amazing. At the end of the perfomance he performed a medley of Culture Club songs. This really left me wanting to see a whole show, the snippet was not nearly enough. When I saw the tour announced I was thrilled that that we coming close by so that I could cover the show.
The Culture Club is very much still entact with its original members except for the drummer. Boy George (vocals), Roy Hay (guitar) and Mikey Craig (bass).
Upon entering the venue so many fans were dressed in neon colors and vintage Culture Club gear. You could tell that many had seen them before and that they were ready to party. I wasn't sure if this would be a stand and dance crowd before I got there but as soon as the lights went down, the full house stood up.
They played a hefty 18 song set mixed with Culture Club song, covers and two Boy George solo songs. The night started off with a cover of The Clash's, London Calling which was unexpected and delightfull. The band was bright and polished and the backup singers were absolutely amazing.
Before their next song, The Next Thing Will Be Amazing, Boy George spoke about the departure of their original drummer sparking this song being written. They then went into a mashup of Church of the Poison Mind and I'm Your Man by Wham. As a fan of Wham this was fun to hear.
Throughout the night they performed their biggest hits including Karma Chameleon, Miss Me Blind, and Do You Really Want to Hurt Me. The most fun cover of the night was David Bowie's, Let's Dance and that just what all of the fans did.
What a great night. The songs were a great collection, Boy George's vocals were on point and the musicians and singers were off the charts. The sold-out crowd was not dissapointed in any way. They danced and sang the night away and forgot that the world was an ugly place for awhile.
