Concert Review: Avatar at The Dome at Oakdale Theater, Wallingford, CT

It was my first experience seeing this masterpiece from Sweden known as Avatar and it was awe-inspiring. For a warm and rainy Tuesday night show the venue was packed with fans of all ages itching at the chance to witness this gathering. From a full parking lot and a line that seemed to go on for ages, there was a feeling that the evening was going to be full of pure bliss.

When you enter The Dome at the Oakdale Theater you enter a different world. The outside ceases to exist once the night begins. The overhead chandeliers are absolutely a perfect touch to the environment that was walked through by hundreds that day. There are numerous places to get beverages and food in addition to a grand selection of merchandise for fans to purchase. There are also two platforms that overlook the crowd in order to see the show unobstructed.

From the beginning in total darkness to the end song “Hail the Apocalypse”, there was an electric presence in the air. Avatar set the mood by appearing in total darkness holding a single lantern in order to set the scene for “Captain Goat". The songs varied from the very up-tempo “Death and Glitz" to the slower but still energetic “Howling at The Waves". The entire setlist was full of hits ranging from Don’t Go in The Forest to Dance Devil Dance.

The crowd was full of energy throughout the beginning to the end. From dancing and headbanging the fans certainly knew how to react! I’ve rarely seen a giant group of people come together and sing along to every song. Witnessing all ages present makes anyone feel positive about the future of metal. The fans were ranging from individuals wearing incredibly intricate face makeup to match Johannes to wearing various music t-shirts. The best thing is that there is never any judgment in the metal scene. Come as you are the motto heard by many.

Avatar kept the crowd engaged by the interactive stage presence. The chant of "We are Avatar" was very powerful in showing the dedication the fans were there to make known. Johannes was constantly engaging with the crowd by talking in between songs and teasing them with funny comments and pure emotions. Watching this group was an experience that no-one will easily forget. The evening ended with streamers shot over the crowd and a promise to return.

The group is on tour for their latest album “Don’t Go in The Forest”, which was released in October of 2025. After this tour ends the group is headed across the pond for a European Tour which should be fantastic for fans.

Personally, I’m looking forward to whatever is next in store for this phenomenal band because it will be hard to beat this night in Connecticut.
