Interview with Marlon Harder of Autopilot!
How would you describe your music to someone who hasn’t heard it before?
Alt Rock with a good mix of indie for fans of the Strokes, The Killers, and Dinosaur Jr.
What has been the most rewarding moment of your career so far?
Being able to tour the US and Canada has definitely been a highlight for us. We have played with so many great bands over the years and met a bunch of amazing people.
Are there any specific milestones you’re working toward in your career?
We are working on a Japan tour in the next 12 months and expanding overseas, so we’re excited about that.
How do you prepare for a show or tour?
Preparing for a show is usually vocal warmups, lots of steam, maybe a shower beer.
Preparing for a show is usually vocal warmups, lots of steam, maybe a shower and a beer.
Getting ready for tour we start rehearsals a few weeks before and make sure the gear and the van are good to go, then train for an existential crisis that probably won’t happen.
Can you tell us about your latest project or release?
We just released our new record "Here Comes the Pressure", which is what we are currently on tour promoting. The album art is Polaroids taken at Manitou Beach, my favourite lake in Saskatchewan, Canada. I am diving off a dock into the lake so taking the photo with a Polaroid was tricky to time it out right. We like how it turned out and used it for the records, cassettes, and CDs.
Who are you listening to right now?
Here’s a few we have been playing for the long drives: Teen Mortgage, The Jump Cuts, The War on Drugs, Bruce Springsteen, Rural Alberta Advantage.
How do you see your music evolving in the next few years?
I feel like every record has been a progression from the last. Autopilot started out as a 3-piece, now for a lot of our shows we are a 4-piece, and I can see Autopilot being a 5-piece band in the future.
What’s next for you? Any upcoming projects, tours, or surprises?
We have a bunch of touring planned that we haven’t announced yet. We have some things that we are excited about in the works. We are just finishing up a tour of eastern Canada including stops in Montreal and Toronto.
Anything You'd Like Your Fans to Know.
Thanks to everyone out there who is supporting hard working and touring independent artists. You help keep the music alive.
