Album Review: By A Thread Returns with Emotional New Album "Mirrored Life"

ree

By A Thread is a post-hardcore band from Vancouver, Canada. They came out swinging in 1999 with “The Last of the Daydreams,” and has been a cornerstone of the Canadian post-hardcore scene. Following their debut, By A Thread released a self-titled album in 2011. They are now back with their new album, “Mirrored Life,” which is set to release on September 12th, 2025, on Spartan Records.

When I first listened to "Mirrored Life" by "By A Thread," it struck me as atmospheric. The guitar tones, emotionally intense lyrics written by Sean Lande and vocalist John Franco, and the heavy yet melodic instrumentation drew me in completely.

“Mirrored Life” opens with “Void,” a high-energy track that sets the tone for this album. The quick drum fill caught my attention right away because it’s something you don’t hear anymore, especially with an atmospheric album. The opening fill and guitar riff had me hooked instrumentally, and the lyrics sealed it. I resonated with the chorus line “disconnected from hope, with no direction where to go.” You feel the pain in the voice of John Franco and the inner battle he is facing.

“Dyed In The Wool” is the perfect follow-up to “Void.” “Dyed In The Wool” has subdued energy that settles the listener into the album. It also has a hard-hitting chorus that keeps the listeners engaged. “Dyed In The Wool” leans more into alternative rock than post-hardcore, highlighting the range that “By A Thread” possesses. The standout part in this track is the interlude section, which gradually builds up to the explosive chorus to end the track.

“Sub Rosa” and “Connaught” truly explore the intense atmospheric style that is prevalent in “Mirrored Life.” Both tracks remind me of Deftones, where they build and build and eventually hit with the interludes in both songs. Although the lyrics are profound and somber, the guitar tone is what truly stands out. It complements the lyrics and the overall vibe of the songs, and when the interlude arrives, it's as if John is communicating through it.

“Tempest” is a slower, more eerie track on “Mirrored Life.” “Tempest” is an emotionally raw track that blends melodic post-hardcore with deep introspective lyrics. The song builds on the guitar tones, dynamic drumming, and soaring vocals that have a sense of urgency and conflict. It’s a beautiful balance of heaviness and melody, like a storm just beneath the surface.

“Radiation” is “By A Thread’s” signature sound with a blend of melodic post-hardcore and emotional intensity. The atmospheric guitars and pulsing rhythm section accompanied by the haunting vocals that build up intensity are near perfection. “Radiation” captures the melancholic, deeply human sound that is “By A Thread.”

“Gravely” and the title track “Mirrored Life” are atmospheric songs that seamlessly combine instrumental and vocally driven parts. “Void” starts off the album with high energy, and “Mirrored Life” brings it to a close with an emotionally driven song. It’s a beautiful way to end the album and the story being told.

The lyrics of "Mirrored Life" are dark and haunting, yet beautifully crafted. John exposes his vulnerability through these words, enabling listeners, even those unfamiliar with "By A Thread," to connect with him and the band. We have all experienced loss and grief in our own unique ways, and these eight songs will guide you through an emotional journey.

The production on this album was also executed excellently. The vocals were balanced, not overpowering or drowned out by the instruments. You can hear the drummer’s kicks, fills, and cymbal shots, and the guitar tones were on point. My only minor critique is that I wish the bass were slightly louder. There are instances where the bass plays something intriguing, but because it's on the lower end, it becomes difficult to fully appreciate it.

"Mirrored Life" by "By A Thread" is an eight-track album that promises an emotional experience for every listener. This album not only encapsulates the signature sound of "By A Thread" but also highlights the band's growth and maturity. Fans of bands such as "Thursday," "Sparta," and "Further Seems Forever" should definitely give this album and band a listen.

“Mirrored Life” will be released on September 12th, 2025, via Spartan Records. You can stream the album on all major platforms or purchase the vinyl from the band’s website.
