LISTEN TO “SPACEWALKING WOMAN” HERE

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 2 – Today, four-time GRAMMY nominee Grace Potter released her new single “Spacewalking Woman,” a celebration of her longtime friend, NASA astronaut Jessica Meir, and their shared fascination with the intersection of science, creativity and exploration. The song took shape through an extraordinary long-distance collaboration, with Potter writing from Earth and Meir contributing ideas and terminology from aboard the International Space Station. Listen to the single HERE.

Potter and Meir first met in 2015, when NASA invited Potter and her band to Johnson Space Center to film a music video for “Look What We’ve Become,” a song centered on perseverance and pursuing one’s passions. A lifelong space enthusiast who had dreamed of space exploration herself, Potter met Meir during the visit, where the two quickly formed a close friendship that has continued for more than a decade, with Potter joining Meir’s family to watch her first launch in 2019.

Meir’s latest mission, NASA’s SpaceX Crew-12 mission to the International Space Station, where she serves as commander, provided the inspiration for “Spacewalking Woman.” After watching Meir complete a spacewalk, Potter reached out to learn more about the specialized tools, terminology and acronyms used by astronauts aboard the ISS. Their conversations soon became the foundation for the song, as Potter found musical inspiration in the language of space exploration.

“The beauty of having a friend who is an astronaut is that there’s a constant reminder every day that my job is extremely easy,” Potter shares. “I’m constantly astonished by the things they’re doing up there on the International Space Station. After watching Jess spacewalk, I started asking her about some of the terminology she was using, words like ‘ratchet’ and ‘pistol grip.’ As she explained the tools and NASA acronyms to me, I realized how lyrical so much of that language was. That’s when I thought: my girl needs a hype song.”

“It started as this private hype track for my homegirl, but then my band and Jess’ crew on the ISS caught wind of it,” Potter continues. “I started thinking, maybe this is too much of a vibe to keep to ourselves. When her mission was extended, it gave us even more time to keep creating and experimenting: me down here on Earth and Jess floating up there in space. I knew I had to share it so everybody could boogie while we cheer on Jess and all the astronauts with her.”

The single arrives on the heels of Potter’s seventh studio album, Trespasser, released in August via Thirty Tigers. Across 10 tracks, the album introduces a cast of characters who venture into forbidden spaces with abandon, continuing the kaleidoscopic storyline Potter began on 2023’s critically acclaimed Mother Road. Potter conceptualized Trespasser as a dimension-hopping road saga, weaving together what she calls “fables and storylines that have been whooshing around my soul for a very long time.” Stream the album HERE.

Produced by her husband and frequent collaborator Eric Valentine (Queens of the Stone Age, Weezer, Slash) and recorded in a cross-country journey beginning at her home in Topanga with Benmont Tench (Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers), continuing in Nashville with Mother Road session players Nick Bockrath (Cage the Elephant), Tim Deaux (Kings of Leon), and Matt Musty (Train), and completed in Vermont with members of her longtime live band (guitarists Indya Bratton and Ricky Dover Jr, bassist Kurtis Keber, drummer Jordan West), the album echoes its origins with a wayward sound that spans from stripped-bare soul to cosmic country to hellraising rock & roll—all while orbiting Potter’s force-of-nature voice and lavishly imagined storytelling.

Next week, Potter will return to the road to join Zac Brown Band on their Love and Fear Tour. She’ll kick off her stretch of the tour in Knoxville, TV, and will also offer support at Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, SC, Allstate Arena in Rosemont, IL, two nights at the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, CO, and more.
