Concert Review: Emei Brings the Night at the Opera Tour to Austin's Historic Scoot Inn

I love when an artist completely surprises me and blows away any expectations I may have. That is what happened on Monday, 10/26, at the historic Scoot Inn in Austin, TX. The artist was Emei.
Emei’s The Night at the Opera tour was the assignment tonight. As an alt-pop-rock artist, her music appeals to a wide variety of listeners; though rooted in pop, her songs range from dance tracks to pop-punk. Heading into the night, the thing I was most intrigued by was the tour's theme. It has a whimsical charm, with a stage decorated with dozens of candles and candelabras—making it feel a bit like a night at The Phantom of the Opera.
When Emei takes the stage, the first thing I really notice is her smile. You can just tell that she truly loves performing and singing live. It’s not a fake smile, but one deeply connected to her heart. Throughout the evening, Emei is accompanied by two dancers in white leotards and traditional masks who add an element of humor and elegance.
True to the theme, there is an “intermission” of sorts. During her guitarist’s solo, Emei makes her way to the center of the crowd for an intimate moment with her fans. Sitting on a railing facing the stage, she sings a few slower, tender songs. It’s a sweet moment as fans light up the area with their cell phone lights.
The “wow” factor for me is Emei’s energy and personality. Sure, the music is great and her vocals are beautiful, but Emei is genuine. Some artists struggle to be real and truly connect with their audience from the stage, but she makes you feel like she could be your bestie or little sister. I’m excited to see what the future holds for Emei. This night at the opera was not a tragedy, but a party, and everyone left with a smile—and a heaping serving of joy.
