A terrific night of music – an exceptional show…is how I would describe They Might Be Giants performance at the House of Blues in Boston. The sold-out show was phenomenal.
For me, a good live performance is when the band knows their audience and plays to their audience and not for themselves. They Might Be Giants were exactly the model of band that I adore to see on stage. The connection between the band and their devoted fans was visible.
Everyone at the venue participated in the music at this sold-out show. From the front row of the floor to the balcony, the room was full of energy. People were dancing, singing, drinking…the ambiance was great.
The engaging manner of John Flansburg (lead vocalist/guitarist) and John Linnell (vocalist, keyboard, accordion) with the fans was terrific. John Linnell on keyboard and accordion conveyed emotions through his solo. The frenetic drumming and the skills of Marty Beller added more energy. Danny Weinkauff was exceptional on bass. The horn section consisting of Dan Levine, Stan Harrison, and Mark Pender was one of the best trios I have seen during my long career as a photographer shooting live music.
Founded in 1982 by vocalist and guitarist John Flansburg and vocalist and multi-instrumentalist John Linnell, They Might Be Giants, after many decades of performing, is still one of the best alternative rock bands. The success of their two nights of performance at the House of Blues in Boston demonstrated the truth of this argument.
