Concert Review: NONPOINT DROP A BULLET AT GRAMERCY THEATRE in NEW YORK CITY with Autumn Kings and Upon a Burning Body

Nonpoint's concert last night was a remarkable event for dedicated fans, as Elias Soriano and the band took the stage at the Gramercy Theatre, delivering a night filled with powerful riffs and cherished memories. Part of their “Painful Statements” tour, the evening was infused with nostalgia and vibrant energy as the band commemorated two significant anniversaries: 25 years since the release of their debut album, Statements, and 20 years since their breakthrough album, To The Pain. These milestones, coupled with the fact that it was a hometown performance for Nonpoint, created an exceptionally memorable night.

The evening began with electrifying performances from the opening acts, Autumn Kings and Upon a Burning Body, who effectively set the atmosphere for the night. Autumn Kings took the stage first, delivering a powerful mix of heavy riffs and emotional depth that resonated with the audience, hailing from Canada. Typically, opening acts do not receive the same level of enthusiasm as the headliners; however, the crowd's reaction clearly indicated otherwise. These artists truly dominated their performance, captivating the audience and asserting their presence on stage.

Upon a Burning Body took the stage next, delivering their trademark blend of old-school, groove-infused rock alongside a captivating stage presence that energized the audience, setting the perfect atmosphere for the headlining act. Hailing from San Antonio, Texas, the band features vocalist Danny Leal and guitarist Ruben Alvarez as its only original members. As they performed, the crowd erupted into a frenzy, with arms swinging, kicks flying, and numerous crowd surfers joining the excitement. Their performance was exceptional, showcasing their talent and leaving a lasting impression.

For Nonpoint’s "Painful Statements Tour Part 2," I have attended several performances at this intimate general admission venue, consistently enjoying the experience. The Gramercy Theatre, which opened its doors in 1937, initially served as a movie theater and art-house before undergoing renovations to become a playhouse and ultimately a concert venue, as noted by NYC-ARTS. Throughout the 1990s, it established itself as a premier destination for live music and continues to attract well-known artists across genres, from hip-hop to metal. Today, its reputation is marked by energetic mosh pits rather than the traditional popcorn. One appealing feature is the venue's sloped floor; although it is entirely standing room, this design provides a slight elevation advantage over the person in front of you.

Nonpoint quickly gained a reputation for their heavy, authentic, and relentless music. Soriano's vocals, marked by their intensity and grit, delivered clever and thought-provoking lyrics. Their significant breakthrough came with the release of Statements in 2000, shortly after signing with MCA Records. Iconic tracks like “What A Day,” “Victim,” and “Mindtrip” remain staples on my workout playlist—a reminder that I should hit the gym soon! In 2005, they released To the Pain, which showcased a powerful setlist combining their earlier works. This album featured one of the standout songs of my generation, “Bullet with a Name,” a track that embodies pure adrenaline and excellence.

If you're new to Nonpoint, let's take a moment to revisit this remarkable band that emerged during the nu-metal movement. Formed in 1997 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Nonpoint burst onto the scene as the nu-metal wave began to sweep across the country. Founding members Elias Soriano and Robb Rivera drew inspiration from heavy guitar riffs infused with hip-hop rhythms, creating a unique sound. Over the years, the addition of musicians Rasheed Thomas, Adam Woloszyn, and Jaysin Zeilstra has further strengthened the lineup, culminating in the band we recognize in 2025.

If you haven't yet experienced a live performance by Nonpoint, you're missing an opportunity to witness a band that consistently delivers exceptional shows. From the outset, Nonpoint establishes a distinctive bond with the audience, a connection that only a select few bands can achieve. I make it a point to attend every one of their concerts whenever they visit the area.
