Concert Review: Gogol Bordello at the Royale, Boston, MA, We Mean It, Man! Tour 2026

Gogol Bordello brought their signature high-energy chaos to Boston’s Royale on March

25, 2026, transforming the packed room into an electrifying, dance-filled frenzy. The

night started with lively performances from Puzzled Panther (see below) and Boris and

the Joy, both of which set the mood with eclectic, globally inspired sounds before joining

the headliners later in the show.

Formed in 1999 and led by charismatic frontman Eugene Hütz, Gogol Bordello has built

a dedicated following through relentless touring and a genre-mixing style that combines

punk rock with Eastern European folk, ska, and cabaret influences. Known for their

explosive live shows, the band has long thrived on crowd interaction, theatricality, and a

sense of organized bedlam that makes each performance feel like a celebration of

global counterculture.

The Boston set relied heavily on fan favorites and newer material from their recent work,

following a structure similar to other stops on the 2026 tour. Songs like “Ignition,” “Not a

Crime,” “Immigrant Punk,” and “Wonderlust King” fueled the early momentum, while “My

Companjera” and “From Boyarka to Boyaca” (featuring Puzzled Panther) showcased

the band’s collaborative, communal spirit. The set built toward staples such as “Start

Wearing Purple” and “Pala Tute,” with an encore that usually included crowd-igniting

tracks like “Alcohol” and “Undestructable” a Stooges cover.

Puzzled Panther proved to be more than just an opener, delivering a vibrant and

rhythmically rich set that blended Afro-Caribbean grooves with funk, soul, and indie

influences. Based in New York City, the group has built a growing regional following through

their high-energy live shows and collaborative spirit, often drawing from a diverse mix of

cultural and musical backgrounds. Their sound—driven by layered percussion, melodic

basslines, and dynamic vocals—quickly engaged the audience and set a celebratory

tone for the night. When they reappeared later in the evening to jam with Gogol

Bordello, it felt like a natural extension of the band’s inclusive, cross-cultural spirit rather

than a typical opening act cameo.

The March 25 show at Royale delivered exactly what Gogol Bordello fans expected: an

energetic, joyful performance where punk spirit blends with world music, making the

event feel like a full cultural celebration rather than just a concert.

A personally fun moment was Eugene joining the photographers in the pit during

Puzzled Panthers’ set, shooting video on his phone and appearing delighted, with an

enormous smile, by the performance.
