Concert Review: Dark Tranquility with Persefone and Soen at Rickshaw Theatre in Vancouver, BC

April 4th, 2026 may have been a regular Saturday to some. But to many others who were present at Rickshaw Theatre in Vancouver, BC it was a Saturday to never forget. I have been to many shows here and something I can say with confidence, is that metal shows hit differently here. The crowd’s energy, especially for lineups like tonight’s… It’s always on a different level.

Persefone opened the night with sheer determination, taking the stage despite missing some members. Before they began their set, one of their members addressed it right away with a brief disclaimer. Persefone is a six piece band hailing from Andorra, and they came all the way to Canada with half of their lineup. The speaking member talked about how they would see it through, and wished his absent bandmates well. Once he was done, he wasted no time diving straight into their set the moment the other two members walked on. Midway through, a drum issue briefly interrupted the momentum, but the band recovered incredibly quickly and carried on without missing a beat.

Their vocalist brought some wild energy, headbanging throughout the set while also proving to be a whiz with solid crowd control. Early on, the guitarist’s stage presence felt a bit reserved from where I was in the photo pit. But once I stepped out and eventually made it back to my seat, the energy switched up across the board. At this point the band felt locked in and fully synchronized. The drummer, smiling the whole time, added a sense of joy that was caused me to smile with him. Sonically, their performance had a really interesting balance and I would describe them as the perfect medium between Dark Tranquility and Soen. Speaking of Soen, their set was up next!

While I was standing in the photo pit waiting for them to start, the air became heavy with anticipation from the crowd. Immediately I knew that they had a very intense, loyal fan base and I can imagine that a lot of people here waited for a while. Soen had a different energy about them. They delivered a set full of progressive goodness, immediately establishing a rich and intense atmosphere. Their vocalist’s tone stood out to me right away. I would describe it as smooth, controlled, and emotionally resonant. The band members moved around the stage quite a bit throughout the show, which made for an engaging and dynamic performance. As mentioned earlier, I had a feeling they had a hardcore fan base and their set only confirmed it. There were some parts of the show where you could hear an incredible amount of people singing along. One of the highlights for me was the addition of keys, which added depth and even more emotion to their sound. I may be biased since it is my favourite instrument, but when that is paired with a crisp guitar tone, it creates a magical, layered experience. Overall, their set felt more mellow than I expected and I do not say this is a negative. In fact, I think it provided a really cool contrast to the intensity that would come later. The visuals projected behind them added another immersive element, which further tied everything together into a cohesive performance. By the end, it was obvious how strongly coordinated they are as a band. Sometime during their set, I found myself recognizing one of their songs. It turns out I already had it saved on Spotify, and the resemblance between record vs live was jaw dropping. The vocals remained the standout element throughout for me, and the crowd’s demand for an encore spoke volumes.

Finally, it was time for Dark Tranquillity to take the stage. As not only the headliner but also a band who has been in the game for longer than I’ve been alive, I knew that we were about to see a phenomenal performance. Dark Tranquility immediately came out swinging, and every move they made landed well with the crowd. I have always believed that melodic death metal always sets a high bar. Well within the first song, they had already greatly surpassed it. From the start, they reminded everyone exactly why they’re considered legends of the subgenre.

Their sound was a beautiful storm of heaviness and melody, with synth elements adding an absolutely whimsical layer over the aggressive core of the music. Visually speaking, it was chaos in the best way possible. Hair was quite literally flying everywhere as the band headbanged relentlessly in windmills and lashes, as the members kept feeding off each other’s energy. At this point, I am completely caught up in the moment. The skeleton visuals added a dark and theatrical touch, while the vocalist commanded the stage while radiating what I would describe as an “overlord” presence. Meanwhile, the guitars were going one hundred all the way with no signs of going down to zero, or even ninety at any point. I am not exaggerating when I say that the level of shredding was enough to melt your brain. Every second of their performance felt controlled and intentional, yet explosive. As expected, they saved some of their best for last and closed the night on an extremely satisfying note. I am already thinking about my next Dark Tranquility show.
