We all have those moments where we feel stuck in a dead end situation or have felt left out and persecuted just because we’re different. It’s all part of the human condition. Greetings From Suffocate City, The Funeral Portrait’s second album, and their first release via Better Noise Music, is a visceral reminder that fans are not alone.
The 14 track offering boasts a variety of musical influences from Avenged Sevenfold to My Chemical Romance to southern rock and is sure to satiate the appetites of a variety of music fans. Frontman Lee Jennings’s vocal range is on display throughout the album ranging from soaring and emotional to dark and rough. Several previously released tracks have been reworked with slick production and strong guest appearances including Eva Under Fire and Danny Worsnop of Asking Alexandria adding an extra layer to the songs. New offerings such as “Doom and Gloom” and “Dopamine” are moody and vulnerable while “Voodoo Doll” and “Hearse For Two” take an unblinking look at addiction and loss. “Alien” speaks to people who feel like outcasts and that they don’t belong. In what could be considered the companion song to “Alien”, “Stay Weird” is sure to become the new anthem for those who ever felt like they were on the outside looking in with encouraging and uplifting lyrics:
Stay weird
So what they hate you
The world can’t contain who you are
The build up to the long awaited release has been slow for the Atlanta based theatrical emo hard rock group. With a few singles such as “Voodoo Doll” and “Alien” being released over the last year and half the band has gained traction on Sirius XM’s Octane. And with the recent release of “Suffocate City” featuring Spencer Charnas of Ice Nine Kills propelling The Funeral Portrait into the Top 10 of the Mediabase Active Rock Radio chart it seems the group is poised to keep the momentum going.
The Funeral Portrait, comprised of Lee Jennings (lead vocalist), Caleb Freihaut (guitar, keyboard, backing vocals), Robert Weston (bass), Cody Weissenger (lead guitar, backing vocals), and Homer Umbanhower (drums) has been touring relentlessly to spread their messages of encouragement and inclusivity from headlining small clubs to continuing their first arena tour opening for rock radio heavy hitters Five Finger Death Punch. They have also been added to select dates in support of the Mongolian hard rock group The HU.
Greetings From Suffocate City is set for release on streaming platforms on 9/13/24.
