Reggae artist Double Tiger returns with his newest single “Yearning” featuring the legendary riddims Sly & Robbie. The soulful single blends the roots of classic reggae warmth with modern dub textures. From the beginning, "Yearning" presents a smooth, catchy rhythm that naturally makes you nod your head, radiating vibes that bring joy.

The lyrics tell a story to which most can relate: a person returning home from work on a Friday who wants to smoke some herb and relax the evening away. He then receives a phone call from a friend at the local “dance,” who tells him it’s “burning up.” The fear of missing out (F.O.M.O.) kicks in, and he “splashes cold water” on his face, “laces up his Clarks,” and proceeds to join the fun.

The production on “Yearning” is rich, rooted, and absolutely incredible. Drummer Sly Dunbar and bassist Robbie Shakespeare (Sly & Robbie) lay down a groove that is warm and inviting. The bassline is the cornerstone of the rhythm, with the snare and kick drum being the root of your head bopping to the beat. There are also subtle synth sounds that resemble smoke, adding just the right amount of taste and texture to the song.

But what stands out the most is the brass section. This is the chef's kiss to this song, bringing everything together. The production on “Yearning” doesn’t chase trends but instead honors tradition with a fresh new take. This song is meant to be heard on vinyl or in a car with a system, driving with no destination.

When I first heard “Yearning,” my mood instantly switched from a work-stress mindset to a chill, relaxed, and happier mood. The best way I can describe the groove is “hypnotic” to the point where the first time I listened to “Yearning,” I didn’t listen to the lyrics. This is not to say that the lyrics are bad or that they get lost in the beat. They tell a story that listeners can instantly relate to, and they are delivered with a poetic style that is in its simplest form. They are raw, and Double Tiger allows them to breathe, which I believe adds to the hypnotic style.

I have always loved and respected Reggae but have never gone out of my way to listen to it. However, Double Tiger’s “Yearning” featuring Sly & Robbie has definitely changed that. This song is now in my road trip playlist where I will be listening to it as I travel to Atlantic City in the coming days. I am excited to hear what Double Tiger has up his sleeve for his next release. If you don’t know who Double Tiger is, I highly suggest you listen to his music and catch him out on tour starting in August and going till October.
