Music Review: Shinedown Release Eighth Studio Album "EI8HT"

Abstract bouquet of wilted multicolored flowers on a white wall, with EIGHT in the top right.

After a year and half in the making, rock radio juggernauts Shinedown released their eighth studio album (Atlantic Records), on May 29th, 2026. Appropriately titled EI8HT, the offering comes 4 years after the 2022 release of Planet Zero  and boasts a whopping 18 song track list that has already spawned 7 singles, including “Young Again”, which was simultaneously released with the album.

The album is ambitious and varied, but doesn’t stray so far as to alienate their fanbase. Though, if you’ve followed the band for any length of time, you know that while the themes touched on are consistent, the Florida based group has never shied away from evolving their sound. EI8HT is a showcase of different genres and gives listeners plenty to choose from.

Each previously released single gave fans a glimpse into what they could expect from the album including veering slightly into country with “Outlaw” and the quintessential chase your dreams song “Searchlight”, the latter of which seamlessly integrates banjo and fiddle into their signature sound.

While the group skirts around being overtly political, “Safe and Sound” comes close as Brent Smith belts, “Take me to your leader/I’ll show you a fraud/An ego unfiltered, out here, playing God,” over driving guitars.

Shinedown continues their trend of heart wrenching lyrics rooted in grief with “Three Six Five” (“If I could hitch a ride on a time machine/I would bring you right back here with me/And I wouldn’t have to watch you disappear”) and “Back To The Living”, in which Smith revealed in a recent interview on Sirius XM’s Octane that he channeled his “inner Otis Redding.”

Each member of the group has talked in the past about the importance of taking care of their mental health and pours their experiences into their music such as the raw and honest “So Glad That You Asked” (“It’s Monday morning and I still haven’t slept/I run a marathon each night in my head/Wish I was fearless like when I was a kid/Slaying dragons living under my bed”). “Imposter” is a standout track in terms of being different from most other songs on the album and tackles the subject of pretending to be okay when in reality you’re anything but. Reaching lower into his vocal range, Smith laments, “When does this get better? ‘Cause I’m getting worse/You think that I’m happy, but I’m just really acting”.

Not being a spectator in life and taking chances is encouraged in the sweeping “Wide Open”, including the open and flowing instrumentation (“You gotta take a shot, so what if you’re rejected/Try to live a little, maybe get arrested/And throwing caution to the wind might be the answer”).

Eric Bass (keyboards/piano/bass) produced, engineered, and mixed the album, doing masterful work keeping the songs flowing in a cohesive manner. The track order is arranged in such a fashion that the listener won’t get emotional whiplash moving from one song to the next. His growth as producer over the last three albums is evident here as he truly understands how to play to the group’s strengths. From the bombastic bass and gang vocals in “Burning Down the Disco” to dropping all instruments for the outro of “Machine Gun” to let Smith’s vocals carry the weight, Bass ensures the group sounds in top form.

Some bands 8 albums into their career would be content to release more of the same that got them to that point. In a world of short and sweet, this album is anything but. It isn’t meant to be merely listened to, it’s meant to be experienced. So, carve out the time and go on a lyrical journey of love, loss, grief, mental health, and risk taking. The destination is worth it.
