Music Review: Motionless in White Release “Afraid Of The Dark”

On January 28, 2026, Pennsylvania based group Motionless In White released a blistering new single, their first new song in 4 years, from their yet to be announced 8th studio album. Staples in the metalcore scene for the last 20 years, Motionless pays tribute to the struggles and the joys their tenured career has given them and “Afraid Of The Dark” is a good start. In a recent statement, frontman Chris Motionless said the song is “about taking control of your destiny and writing the script of your own future without any doubt or apprehension.”

The lyrics seem to reflect just that. While a casual listener may find the inclusion of lyrics from songs past songs about their journey (“If you mean it, you’ll make it” ~ 570) or titles of albums (“A creature that found a home”) and songs (“Carry the torch in your heart”) cheesy or corny, more devoted fans will appreciate all of the nods to the music that built Motionless from the ground up.

The song also encourages the listener to follow their dreams with seemingly reckless abandon with an arena worthy chorus:

“You’ll never know

Yourself till you walk alone

With blind faith and broken bones

So follow the light in your heart, and be not afraid of the dark”

The music itself is also a nod to the group's ever evolving styles. From the blast beats that pack a punch, the synthesizer that sounds like something that could have been on “Scoring The End Of The World”, to the classic, blistering metalcore riffs from the “Infamous” and “Reincarnate” eras, the listener is taken on a two decade sonic ride through Motionless’s discography in just 4 and half minutes. Chris Motionless revealed during the previous album cycle that he had been taking vocal lessons. Whether or not that is still the case, his vocals are in top form. From the guttural screams in the verses to the raw emotion in the bridge, the track showcases Motionless’s incredible range, cementing him as one of the best metalcore vocalists on the scene.

Does the track follow the standard metalcore format? Yes. Are you able to predict the verses, chorus, and breakdown because of that? Also yes. But not a second of that format is wasted with filler, which is where Motionless In White at their best.

You can find “Afraid Of The Dark” on all major streaming services.
