Album Review: Sleep Theory, Afterglow!

In a time where technology has fundamentally changed how we as a society do things like shop and find new music, it makes sense that bands would take to social media platforms such as YouTube and TikTok to get the word out about their projects. Sleep Theory was no exception. They quickly became Sirius XM Octane darlings with their debut singles “Numb” and “Another Way”, climbed up the Active Rock radio charts, impressed Zach Myers and Brent Smith of Shinedown enough for them to invite Sleep Theory out for their first major tour, and they haven’t looked back since. Sleep Theory has been busy over the last 3 years, including touring with the likes of Beartooth as well as continuing to write, record, and release their first full length effort, Afterglow.

Afterglow, released May 16th on Epitaph Records, is a 12 track, 40-minute trip through the band’s pop, R&B, and hard rock roots. The first single off the new album, “Stuck In My Head”, spent 5 weeks on the Big Uns Countdown and has garnered heavy airplay across the country. The most recent releases, “Static” and “Paralzyed”, have darker, heavier feels that suit the band nicely without losing the big hook choruses the group has become known for. The dramatic, sweeping closing track “Words Are Worthless” will strike a chord with those who have cared for, loved, or even known anyone having difficulty with their mental health.

Where the album really shines is in the way the group leans into using all three vocalists. Cullen Moore is rapidly cementing himself as a prominent voice in the hard rock scene with his smooth yet driving presence. Paolo Vergara’s (bass) harmonies complement Moore’s soulful voice and stand out in tracks like “Afterglow” and “Static” in addition to the hard-hitting track “Hourglass”. Daniel Pruitt’s (guitar) screams are featured more prominently throughout the album including the hidden gem “III”. With the inclusion of “Numb” and “Fallout” from their previously released EP, “Paper Hearts”, there’s sure to be something for everyone on this strong, well paced debut album.

The album can be found on streaming services as well as physical media available through their website. And be sure to catch the band on their summer tour that kicks off Tuesday, May 20th in Birmingham, Alabama. Click the link below for dates.
